Kelsey Grammer stars as Thomas Kane , mayor of Chicago city. But Grammer is no ordinary politician, to quote one of the other characters, “nothing happens in Chicago without his knowledge”.
He is the true embodiment of what power is all about. From allocation of contracts for city projects to even determining who becomes the next governor of the state of Illinois, the mayor is always in the background pulling all the strings. So,when he is diagnosed with louie body, a degenerative disorder which slowly causes you to lose both sensory, mental and motor function, it means he has a few cognitive years ahead.
But you cannot help write him off. It seems like the mayor’s downfall is all but sure on top of several other problems he already faces. For instance, having spent several years in office, he definitely has enemies who want to see him out especially several other adelmen (the equivalent of councillor’s in our setting) who hatch up a plan to rid themselves of the force that is Kane. He also has to fight off a looming political scandal about illegal damping of waste which led to several of his constituents getting cancer threatening his public image and approval. More to that, his life is not what it seems as seen in the public eye.
He has an estranged relationship with his daughter that he wants to mend, while his marriage is one of convenience. He married the daughter of the former mayor who also happens to be a vegetable in a wheel chair. The young man he is fronting for governor, Ben Zajac is a raging sex addict who is sure to compromise his candidacy.
Generally, this series takes you into the world of high stakes politics, where your enemies are closer than you think and no one is trustworthy, regardless of what you have done for them.
But the best part is the ending of this first season. You are tempted to give Mayor Kane a standing ovation for the way he handles his problems.
With good dialogue, unmistakably good acting and an out-of-this world plot, You will definitely agree with the people who chose Kelsey GrammEr as best actor in a drama series at the recent Golden Globe Awards.
